Serious Times
Reflections on "Living in Serious Times," by James Emery White
Before turning in last evening, I spent some time reading through numerous blog posts contained within a substantive website I recently discovered, called "Church and Culture." One of the articles struck me on a deep level. The article is called "Living in Serious Times," written by James Emery White, former President of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
In the post, White tells the story of a profoundly life-altering experience that occurred in his life when he was still a young man. The experience happened, of all times, while he was watching "the second installment of the original Star Wars trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back."
Of this experience, and his thoughts following it, White says:
"Then it came to me as startlingly sudden as a rip of lightning and as soundingly affirmed as any thunder that could follow: That's what God's invitation to the Christ-life is all about! There is a galactic struggle going on, and I could be a warrior. I could give my life to something that was bigger than I was, that would live on long after I was gone. What I did mattered and could impact all of history—even into eternity."
These feelings regarding our time and place in eternity are something we should all share. Truly we live in serious times presently, and the situation calls for serious people. As Christ said, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)
I pray that you shine today!
